First question, how did you get involved with the porn industry?
I was bartending and looking for work making more money, so I went to the city of St. Louis. I went to a strip club to look for a job as a bartender, but was told they were not hiring bartenders at that time. They did give me a flyer for amateur night happening later that week, which piqued my interest. I was broke and needed money, and the prize for winning the contest was $500 and a potential job. I had never even been in a strip club, and when I asked to look around, they wouldn’t let me until I actually showed up for amateur night. Long story short…I got first place out of 14 contestants…and the $500!
I danced for two years, but wanted to move to LA, so I began looking for dance venues online, but couldn’t find anything promising. While searching online, I came across an “adult job” website which had a variety of companies which featured modeling, dancing, and adult actor/actress jobs. That’s where I found my first agent, who flew me to California and I was able to meet a lot of production companies. I was with his agency for a year or so, then I left and began booking jobs on my own with companies I had previously worked with. I needed more work, so I partnered with a new agent, who has been fantastic. I continue to work through his company. What did your friends and family think when you told them? Did you tell them?
I told my family, who has continued to support me, although my sister initially had a difficult time with the idea itself. My close friends know and have remained a great support. I’m from a small community, so word got around and people began emailing and texting each other… so everyone eventually found out. Word spread a lot faster than I expected. How did you go about telling them?
It was a process. When I first went to California, I told them I was just lingerie modeling. But when I came back home a week later, I told my parents in person, and they took it surprisingly well. It was never what they thought I would do for a career, but they trusted my decision and judgement.
The person who had the most difficult time with it was my younger sister. She felt the industry was degrading to women and that I was being exploited. After some time talking with her and explaining the professionalism of the production companies I was working with, she became more accepting. Things are good with us now. Do you feel your job affects your dating life in any way?
Yes, because I never tell people what I do—because they may judge me or think I’m “easy.” People tend to make assumptions about women who work in the industry and think that’s how they are in their personal life, which couldn’t be farther from the truth for me. The majority of us are very normal and are only playing a character on film. Would you date a fellow porn star?
Yes. Since they are also working in the industry, they would be more understanding of my career. Plus it is probably safer, since “safe sex” is a must in the industry and we get tested weekly…and you can’t say that about the general public. What do you think people misunderstand most about the porn industry?
What people see, in many aspects, is not reality. For example, the scene may be set in a massage parlor, but is really being filmed in a mansion in California with an entire camera crew, makeup artists and professional lighting.
Another misunderstanding is the amount of travel you do within the porn industry. Since beginning my career, I have traveled a lot with all expenses paid. I’ve flown first class, stayed in five star resorts and hotels, and have dined at amazing restaurants. I probably would have never had many of the opportunities, like this, if I hadn’t been in the industry. There was a HIV scare this summer and the industry was shut down for a few weeks. How much of an effect did this have on you financially?
It had a huge effect on me financially! In this industry, you have to be prepared for a potential moratorium, and plan accordingly. The scary thing is you do not know how long it will last, so it could be month or more with no income; it depends on the amount of people directly affected and the re-testing process. Although it is good they test actors and actresses so frequently, so they can detect [any diseases] before they are exposed. One aspect the public tends to forget is that each of the actors and actresses have personal, private lives, and that is how most of the exposure occurs. Porn stars are among the first people to use new apps and services like the EAZE marijuana delivery app that blew up in LA. Why is that, do you think?
Possibly because we do have a lot of free time between work, and usually have the income to try out new apps and products. But I will say getting weed delivered directly to your front door is convenient and, frankly, pretty damn awesome! After all, my stage name, Cali Hayes, came from the strain of marijuana called “Cali Haze.” Explain the networking process you use to promote yourself and to get more work.
That’s the reason I have a great agent. We do attend conventions and expos, industry parties, and connect with our fans on Twitter. What’s the deal with porn stars and Twitter?

Good eyebrows frame the face, so the shape is important. I work on them a little every few days, to keep clean lines and nice arches.
I wear sunscreen every day! It’s a must and I put it on before my makeup.
Coconut oil is also a must-have! You can use it for so many things, but my favorite is as a moisturizer. What are the top 3 things you need if you want to become a porn star?
1) Make sure you are going into it for the right reasons
2) A good agent you can trust who will get you professional work
3) Intact self esteem Where do you see yourself in twenty years?
Out of the city, somewhere on the west coast, with a nice, comfortable home and possibly with my own family. I’d like to own my own business, in or out of the adult industry. I’m not sure yet; twenty years is a long way out. So much can happen. Do you still want to be my friend after this? Haha!

Joking aside, I hope that this gives you a fresh perspective on the porn industry. It is easy to judge people without giving them a chance. I’ve been guilty of doing that in the past and I try my best not to do that anymore.
I know a few people I am “friends with” on social media who will not like anything Cali has to say. They are women who will post bible quotes for days, but will also post pictures of themselves over the weekend with their boobs and butt cleavage out for all to see. Here I am going about my business of scrolling through my newsfeed when all of the sudden this creature shows up, and she’s sliding down my newsfeed like she’s on a greased up stripper pole with a couple of WWJD bumper stickers on it. However, she will still hate on anyone involved in the porn industry because it is, according to her, immoral.
Riiiiiight.
My thoughts are if you continue to be judgmental of everything around you, then you’ll continue to let life pass by you without truly experiencing any of it. Sometimes that attitude is the result of ingrained beliefs or playing it safe or simply feeling stuck where you’re at.
Hopefully, in this New Year, we can begin to look at things more objectively and have more of an understanding of the people around us. Live a little or die with regrets.
