A suspect authorities believe attempted to break into several Kingwood homes in a single morning back in October has been taken into custody.
A Harris County grand jury originally indicted Joshua Ray Gower, 25, for felony theft in January. According to a probable cause affidavit filed in the 338th District Court, Gower started his alleged crime spree early on October 19, was unsuccessful three times and finally succeeded in his alleged fourth attempt at breaking into an area residence.
Investigating Houston Police Kingwood Division Officer James MacIntosh says the first incident that day occurred in the 5600 block of Island Fern Ct. around 9 a.m..
“A neighbor reported to police that the heard a home alarm sounding off and looked out a window and saw a white male matching the defendant’s description walking away from the home,” MacIntosh wrote in the probable cause statement. When police arrived, they reportedly found forced entry to a back window but nothing was taken from inside the residence. Video obtained from another neighbor’s home security camera gave investigators a description of the suspect and his vehicle, and confirmed he left empty-handed.
About 20 minutes later, investigators say, police were called to a home in the same neighborhood, in the 1500 block of Chestnut Grove Ln., where a female resident home alone had heard a suspicious noise and found a man in her backyard, trying to force open a pair of French doors.
“She yelled at the male and he ran off,” MacIntosh said.
The woman provided officers with the same suspect description they had been given at the first residence.
Around noon that same day, police were dispatched to Kingwood Lakes Apartments in the 3700 block of Kingwood Dr. where a couple had been asleep in bed around 9:45 a.m. when they were awakened by a noise at the bedroom window. Looking outside, they found Gower, a distant acquaintance who had been introduced at their home recently to play video games, kneeling in front of the window.
“They said that Gower told them he came over to play xBox,” MacIntosh said. The couple reportedly shooed the unexpected visitor away and discovered a couple of hours later that, according to court records, the screen had been removed from their bedroom window and the glass was cracked.
Police decided to pay a visit to Gower, who lived at the same apartment complex. Outside his apartment, they found a vehicle matching the description of the getaway car provided by witnesses and the personal security video obtained earlier.
Officers were reportedly allowed to enter Gower’s apartment and discovered marijuana inside. Gower was arrested on marijuana charges. A consented search of his girlfriend’s vehicle reportedly led to the discovery of a coin collection and a printer stashed behind the back seat. Gower’s girlfriend said she had never seen the items before.
Later that evening, around 6 p.m., police received a call from another Kingwood Lakes Apartments resident who wanted to report a burglary. Someone had forced entry through a window, court records state, and taken a coin collection and a Hewlett Packard printer.
“The complainant was also missing a new flat screen TV, a gold watch, and two Toshiba laptops,” MacIntosh said. “[I] recovered a Toshiba power cord for a laptop from the defendant’s girlfriend’s car. The complainant identified the recovered items as his.”
In addition to the indictment on felony theft charges from January, an additional charge of attempted burglary was added in April. Gower was arrested on a warrant June 7. He currently remains in Harris County Jail on bonds totaling $30,000. The misdemeanor marijuana charge was discharged in November, when Gower pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 days in jail.
