Phil St. John's "Getting It at the Rave" is one of those videos where style really does overwhelm the proceedings in a good way, trouncing over substance and still managing to create a most unique video, with some grand performers, some of them nearly anonymous, tumbling over each other in splendid fashion. "Getting It at the Rave" is a very deliberate sequel to St. John's "Getting It" (1985), another very stylistic piece from a bygone era. In this video, however, St. John not only echoes that piece and its time period (some of it looks like early MTV), but his design concept is plucked right from the 1960s. The guys, however, are from the present day.
Throwing all of this together could have easily been a garish homage to directorial self-wonder, but instead it emerges in its true rave spirit, a blast of evening-long sex started in the back of a van and ended in candlelit splendor after dozens of guys spilled whatever on whomever in the ultimate quest for Saturday-night sex.
One of the best things about this film is the way it joins together its sex scenes. Other than the first and last scenes, the actual rave sex scenes take place all together, with the sex so purposely jumbled that one gets the feel of being there, in a smoky drug-induced sexual haze where everything is possible and everything makes sense.
But first, we must get to the rave.
Ever-adorable German brunet Hans Ebson wakes up from a most sexual dream that takes place in a fantastical forest to find hunky blonde roommate Billy Brandt asking to borrow some shorts for the rave. On their way there, they stop at a convenience store where tall blond Brock Hensley offers them cannabis. Billy then goes to have sex with a familiar woman, leaving Hans to take on Brock and his friend Mark Slade in the back of a van. As for lead performer Billy Brandt, he reinvents himself here from the trapping image of an overly blonde newcomer to a forceful dependable star.
