Other Side of Julie' Shows High Quality from All Angles
Countless filmakers make attempts to bring mainstream quality to adult films, and fail. 'The Other Side of Julie' is one of the handful of adult films that can claim that honor.
The problem filmakers face is time. In mainstream cinema, life goes on in compressed time and sex is essentially implied by a jump cut to the next day after a passionate kiss. THe story maintains integrity and motion because certain events can be cast aside. In porn, you have the same story lines, but the trials and tribulations of life get thrown away because--hell--you have to show the fucking. It's essential in genre.
'Julie' manages to have an engaging story, worthy of a mainstream film, while depicting some very hot, exciting sex. And the sex is not just thrown in and out of context like most porn films. Here's the story...
John Leslie plays a seemingly average married man who drags himself to his job as an insurance salesman every morning. His Loving wife is pining for more intimacy, but he claims to work a lot and is too tired when he gets home. John drives his station wagon as he goes to 'work.' He has a secret life and business, though. One of his jobs is as a private financier of businesses for women. He fronts their start-up money for a business and collects with interest, plus interest. When he goes to collect the check, he gets laid too. His other scam is to date older women, steal from them, confess his misdeed, then gain sympathy with a sob story. He gets the cash and the pussy (and sympathy).
The story takes a twist when one of his older marks, turn the tables on him and threatens to call the police unless he becomes her consort.
So now the guy is really in a bind. On one hand, he's fucking like crazy, but on the other, he can't make love to his wife because he's tired.
Laer it becomes a family afair when his wifes niece comes into town to visit her mother who is also in town to visit John's wife later. Yes, you got it. John's blackmailing mark turns out to be his wife's sister (he had never met her). John's wife finds out and the family business will never be the same.

Mike Robbins (the highly prolific John Leslie) leads a double life, by day a normal typical suburban husband to Julie (Suzannah French), by night a high class gigolo. One day Julie's slutty cousin Kim, comes to visit (she's hitch-hiking there and bangs anyone willing to give her a lift. I can't pick up girls like this why?) Then his wife's cousin's mother hires him unbeknowst to either party. This stirs up some trouble to say the least. But Julie isn't such a guilt-free angel herself. her husband's lack of interest leads her to masturbation and paying for sex herself. Most of the sex scenes simply aren't that hot or steamy. But then again not every adult film of the "golden Age", can in fact be golden. Feel free to skip this one and not worry about missing anything

This is a classic hot film that centres on a couple (John Leslie and Suzanne French) where the husband is secretly earning his money as a stud for hire, and on her subsequent sexual liberation when she finds out. Things go fine until he meets his match in the insatiable Jackie O'Neil; she exhausts him to point where he can't carry on, at which point his wife steps in...
I don't know about you, but as far as I'm concerned most porno's have one scene that is the hottest; when you go back to the film, that's the scene you fast-forward to, (especially if you've got 20 minutes before work to kill.
) Since examples are better than theory; with "Debbie Does Dallas" - the Bambi Woods/Richard Bolla Scene, "Taboo" - the excellent seduction scene with Kay Parker/Mike Ranger, more recently (but still getting-on a bit) Wicked's big budget "Conquest" - Asia Carrera/Vince Voyeur and Wicked's "Priceless" - Jenna Jameson/Peter North. The only films I have seen recently where the heat is maintained throughout is this movie and Alex De-Renzys "Babyface". This film is chock full of hot scenes, to the point where you really do struggle to pick the best; The Kristine Heller/JL scene on the stairs is volcanic, as is the JL/Jackie O'Neil scene where the action almost melts the camera, but you also have the threesome where JL catches Suzanne French and her Niece getting cosy. Even the Seventies-style orgy near the end is hot, and these are usually (IMHO) the most boring part of the action. The music is good, the camerawork is excellent, the girls are pretty and natural (although there isn't an Annette Haven or an Angel in the film to blow you completely away), and the sexy knee-length leather boots are very much in evidence (just me on that one then ???)
Overall then; a classic 3.75 on the old Imperator Scale. Deduct a few points for dubbing on a couple of scenes, but I am being very picky here. Cheers, S.
